Small beginnings. A remarkable calling.
Work in a time of war
When the occupying forces closed his university, Karol’s life changed. Between 1940 and 1944, he worked in a quarry and later in a chemical factory. The work helped him earn a living and avoid deportation to Germany.
A calling kept in secret
In 1942, Karol began studying in Kraków’s secret seminary under Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapieha. During these difficult years, he was preparing to become a priest.
From Karol to John Paul II
After the war, he continued his studies and was ordained in 1946. In 1978, the former quarry worker was elected Pope John Paul II.
